Um does anyone know what happened to April?? Just under the gun getting our fruit of the month in for the month of April, yikes!
Since berries are coming in season right now, it made sense to showcase one of our favorite berries here at Total Health and Fitness: blackberries.
The delicious and flavorful blackberry owes its dark blue color to its high level of anthocyanins, a particular type of very powerful antioxidant. Blackberries are packed full of antioxidants which are helpful in preventing cancer and also help protect the body during cancer treatment. In fact, blackberries have one of the highest values of antioxidants of most fruits. Blackberries are high in Vitamin C and fiber which both help reduce the risk of some types of cancer. In addition to be potent cancer fighters, blackberries contain ellagic acid-a plant compound which has been found to have anti-carcinogen, anti-viral and antibacterial properties. (source)
A whole cup of blackberries has only 62 calories, 2 grams of protein and 14 grams of carbohydrate PLUS 8 grams of fiber! They are great mixed with lowfat cottage cheese, as a salad topper,, or eaten plain 🙂 ENJOY!
